Top 5 ways to battle afternoon fatigue

Some smart people have come up with ways to combat the ever approaching enemy of afternoon fatigue, with 5 things that will give you a spark at the end of the day and trust me, FUTURE YOU will thank you for not leaving more work for them tomorrow!

Have you hit the wall and it’s not even 2:00 pm in your work day? We all have afternoon fatigue from time to time which makes the clock slow down to the speed of a snail slithering across a bed of nails. Out of the blue you feel the energy you came back with from lunch, shrivel like a balloon, yet now you are expected to finish that report or present that project’s details to the rest of the creative team with “Enthusiasm” that seem so far out of reach like stretching for $1 million dollars in a briefcase suspended 10 metres from the side of a bridge. But I digress…(it’s that time here for me too).

Here are the Top 5 Things to Combat Afternoon Fatigue.

  1.  Move Around and Stretch It Out

If you are struggling to think straight, feeling a bit stiff or even bogged down, getting your blood flowing is the best and cheapest way to get those good blood cells around your body not to mention your endorphins. Standing up, moving around and stretching makes the blood pump which helps the blood travel to the liver to clean your blood and renew your energy.

  1. Take A (5-minute) Break

If you able to, this is great to free your mind up for 5-minutes and brings a sense of importance to yourself and not the task you need to complete. However, don’t use this time to check social media or any other online things.

This time is best spent taking in some area, if possible or just moving from the position you’ve been in can loosen an idea from the wall of your brain subconsciously which can help you move forward in your work.

Either way, take a 5-min official (or unofficial) break to reset your “thinker”.

  1. Grab a Towel or Splash Your Face

This technique is a great way to wake you up or at least send your body into a minor shock.

Soaking a towel in cold water and putting on your head will cool that stress you didn’t even realise you had, to a light simmer and will engage your adrenal gland and kick it into gear, refreshing your mind and cells.

This goes double for the cold water in the face trick.

Just make sure there is a dry towel at hand so you don’t go back with wet clothes.

  1. Crank Up The Tunes

If you know there is music you listen to at the gym that pumps you up, or you have a “Getting Ready” jam that makes you happy, then get your headphones on, find that awesome playlist, crank it up and get working.

Your Pavlovian response to this kind of stimuli should be… well, stimulating.

Your subconscious associates your selected music to the feeling of excitement or feeling of your blood pumping which could respond to perk you up.

  1. Have A Snack

We always forget that even though we just had lunch, our brain might still need a hit of sugar or even better, a fresh food vending machine snack option.

So, if the last 4 things on this list haven’t worked (or not quite well enough) you can combine these together with a quick trip to the fresh food vending machine down the hall to give you the energy you need.
